
Migros Ticaret A.Ş. is one of the major supermarket chains in Turkey. The foundation of Migros was laid in 1954, following a decision by the Istanbul Municipality to establish a similar organization to the Migros cooperative in Switzerland, which was known by the slogan “King of Low Prices.” It was launched by Fahrettin Kerim Gökay, who was the Governor and Mayor of Istanbul at the time, and also provided subsidized sales to the citizens of Istanbul.

History
In 1975, under the guidance of Vehbi Koç, Koç Holding acquired the shares of Migros. The company went public in 1991. Since the end of 1990, Migros has expanded into large-scale retailing and acquired the retail chain Tansaş in 2005.
As of 2020, Migros operates 2,213 Migros stores, 61 Macrocenter stores, and 30 Ramstore locations abroad. For online operations, it runs Migros Sanal Market and Migros Hemen.
Migros became the first and only retail company to be included in Borsa Istanbul’s sustainability index in 2014–2015 for its human-centered and healthy living initiatives.
In 2007, Koç Holding put Migros up for sale. On February 14, 2008, Koç Holding sold its shares to a UK-based company, Moonlight Capital SA. In early 2015, Anadolu Group acquired 40.25% of the company’s shares.
On June 10, 2016, Migros acquired 95.5% of Tesco Kipa for 302 million Turkish Lira. On March 16, 2018, Migros announced that it had acquired 56 stores from Uyum Market, owned by Makro Market, and 17 Makro Market stores in Antalya for a total of 105 million TL. With this acquisition, Migros added 48 hypermarkets, 48 supermarkets, 72 express stores, and 320,000 m² of net sales area. The number of domestic shopping centers also increased to 30 with Tesco Kipa’s 26 malls across 20 provinces.
